Why did you choose animals as your characters?
Every good children’s book has a handful of lessons hidden just under the surface. One of the reasons I love picture books so much is how they are both really simple and very complex at the exact same time. I was hoping this book would communicate to young people that they are not alone–there’s a really huge and diverse community of people out here doing all of the diabetes stuff you are doing. If I tried to draw a bunch of people, I would be making a lot of choices that could have clouded this message. Also, penguins and raccoons are way more fun to draw!
