“How do you treat lows? We’re not just talking about candy vs juice. Treating lows also means managing expectations, considering mental health and even addressing other people’s reactions. The authors of the new children’s book “When I Go Low” join us for a great discussion about what can be a frightening issue for kids and adults who use insulin.”

“When I Go Low,” Written by Ginger Vieira and illustrated by Mike Lawson, is a new children’s book for kids with Type 1 diabetes. The story follows Jax the Cat, who lives with T1D, on his quest to describe what it feels like to have low blood sugar. He even finds new dia-buddies along the way! BT1 recently chatted with Ginger and Mike about the book and their own experiences with T1D.

Helping Young Children with Type 1 Diabetes Learn to Spot Low Blood Sugar

The downright courage of young children with T1D is what inspired me to start creating text for a book that would not only give those kids a high-five for their courage, but also offer them a fun way to stay safer as people who need to take insulin every day.

(Have I mentioned how scary low blood sugars can be at any age? I can’t even imagine how scary it must be for parents caring for young children with T1D.)

Taking note of what storyline patterns kept my children’s attention as toddlers, I set out to write this T1D book with a bit of repetition, a variety of enthusiastic characters, and clear explanations of a handful of the most common symptoms of low blood sugar.

Cherise: All right, since we talked about how complicated diabetes is, we talked about balancing diabetes, and we both talked about those Bright Spots & Landmines, I would like to throw in there a book that was just released by Mike Lawson (diabetesdoodles, Twitter: @MrMikeLawson, Instagram: @mrmikelawson) which is a diabetes picture book, which is for parents who have diabetes, or parents of children with diabetes to share their pictures. How to check, check, check. So I'd like to put it out there.

PODCAST: Diabetes By The Numbers

Open Up Your Bag is a delightful children’s book that helps familiarize young ones to the everyday tasks that come with living with diabetes. As Mike mentions, it also helps facilitate discussion about life with diabetes between kids and their parents.

If you’re a fan of Mike’s artwork at DHF and elsewhere, you’ll notice it in the new book because he’s the illustrator too! In fact, that image above is me, along with the title of the book. And I love it.

In our conversation, we talk about the book, about Mike’s creativity, and his lifelong love of children’s literature. It’s a terrific chat, and a terrific book.
